Twelve South's BookArc is attractive, well-made, and reasonably priced for a solid-metal iPad stand. It even accommodates an iPad in a thin case. However, its shallow footprint makes it a bit less.

Very nice indeed! First off, I was surprised to see that the pricing through Apple was more than competitive. It holds my 'new to me' 13' Macbook pro retina well and it doesn't feel like it may tip over. The finish is excellent. I also looked at the Henge vertical dock (on the internet) and it wasn't obvious to me that it was actually made of aluminum. I saw one reference that suggested it was injection molded plastic with a metal finish. I can confirm that the BookArc is one solid chunk of aluminum. Nice silicone inserts as well that grip the surface of my desk rather nicely. I've experimented with two orientations.

Exhaust down and exhaust up. I haven't really determined if it makes much difference at all to the internal temperatures. I was just thinking that exhaust up made more sense from a chimney effect consideration.

It works well either way and there is little to block airflow. Connecting to my peripherals is a snap. All I have is the power cord and a thunderbolt to my display. Can't see how much better a 'dock' would be for me.

Unless the dock had an 'eject' button that signalled my laptop to eject attached drives and go into sleep. As it stands I have to get to Finder and eject them one at a time. Maybe I'll make a keyboard shortcut.

It turned out to be a nice update and I'm hoping will keep my batteries a bit cooler and therefore last a bit longer. Before I had propped up my computer on some spacers (small 2'x2' ceramic tiles from Home Depot) to give it some airflow underneath. This is definitely an upgrade. Back to work!
