Need to buy parts for this project? The longitudinally installed BMWE46 drivetrain came with a choice of three styles of transmission:. Manualtransmission with manual clutch.

Sequential manual6-speed gearbox (SMG) with automatic computer controlled hydraulically operatedclutch. SMG models are equipped with paddle-shift levers on the steering wheel.

AutomaticSteptronic transmission with choice of Normal, Sport or Manual mode. WhenManual mode is engaged, the driver can upshift or downshift through gear rangesby flipping the shift lever forward or backward. The manual and SMG transmissionsare filled with manual transmission fluid, while the automatic is filled withATF (automatic transmission fluid). BMW specifies 'lifetime' fluid for all itstransmissions and sometimes defines lifetime as 100,000 miles. I think it is agood idea to service your fluid every 60,000 miles.

If you're unsure of thelast service, replace the fluid as soon as possible. Doing so will extend thelife of your transmission. If you are unsure of the lastservice, replace the fluid as soon as possible, as it helps to takepreventative steps to avoid future issues. Also, maintaining the transmissionwith fresh fluid will extend the life of your gearbox. There are many options forreplacement fluid.

A good rule of thumb is, choose the best you can afford andbe sure it meets BMW's current specifications for your vehicle.Keep in mind that when your car was serviced before, partsmay have been replaced with different size fasteners used in the replacement. The sizes of the nuts and bolts we give may be different from what you have, sobe prepared with different size sockets and wrenches.Protect your eyes, hands and body from fluids, dust anddebris while working on your vehicle. If you are working with the electricalsystem, disconnect the battery before beginning. Always catch fluids inappropriate containers and properly dispose of any fluid waste. Recycle parts, packaging and fluids when possible. Do not work on your vehicle if you feel thetask is beyond your ability.Vehicle models change and evolve as they grow older, so thevehicle shown in our illustrations may vary slightly from yours.

Jack up all four corners of yourvehicle. I suggest using four jack stands and slowly raising the vehicle to therequired height.

The vehicle needs to be level when checking and replacing the fluid.Next remove the splash shield. Comments and Suggestions:RTrotterComments: Nick,It doesn't grind, but goes into 2nd smoothly.Transmission neutralizes and there is no forwardmomentum until you shift into 3rd. Thanks.October 16, 2018Followup from the Pelican Staff: Sounds like you have a misaligned shift fork.

Possibly broken. I would inspect the shift linkage and bushings first. Nick at Pelican PartsRTrotterComments: I have a 2000 BMW 323 Ci w/ a 5-speed transmission.Recently, it has become a 4 speed.

Upon the first start of the day, I don't have 2nd gear and have to shift from 1st to 3rd. After 10 minutes of operation, 2nd gear is back and I've got 5 speeds again the rest of the day. After setting overnight, I'm back to 4 gears for the first 10 minutes of operation, then normal again. Any suggestions? Thanks!October 15, 2018Followup from the Pelican Staff: How do you mean don't have?

Does it grind and not go into gear? Does the shifter engage but the transmission neutralizes? - Nick at Pelican PartsVenuComments: I have an E46 2004 BMW325i 4 dr sedan with 160K kms which is approx. 100K miles and when I called the BMW dealership nearby the service advisor told me that it is a sealed unit and the liquid never needs to be replaced as it is good for the lifetime of the carI found that strange that there is nothing that can last forever especially since my car is 14 yrs old and had done high mileage!!!April 26, 2018Followup from the Pelican Staff: it is considered a lifetime fluid, lifetime of automotive products is generally 100k miles or failure. It is serviceable and frequently performed by the aftermarket to prolong transfer case life. Nick at Pelican PartsJayComments: Ok I have a 2004 bmw 325i with a 5 speed getrag manual transmission. Are you sure you aren't looking at the Power Steering reservoir? Can you share a photo?- Nick at Pelican PartsArtComments: Any time I've asked a local shop for a trans flush, they always come back and tell me they don't have the right machine to put in the BMWs specific pressure of fluid. If I remember right. The car is nearing 100,000mi and I really want to flush the trans. Manual trans, 2001 325i.

Is that a real issue or can I use any old fluid pump?July 28, 2016Followup from the Pelican Staff: Manual trans does not need a flush. Just a drain and fill, sh shown in this article.Give The Pelican Parts parts specialists a call at 1-888-280-7799. They can figure out what part or repair kit you need.- Nick at Pelican Parts.
